ELKINS -- A fire at an abandoned two-story house on Diamond Street Sunday afternoon snarled traffic but resulted in no injuries, officials said.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. Sunday, the Elkins Fire Department and other first responders were called to the scene of the structure fire in the vicinity of Hardee's Restaurant.

Elkins Fire Department Chief Steve Himes said he was out of town at the time of the blaze Sunday, but noted that the West Virginia State Fire Marshal was on the scene investigating on Monday.

"The Fire Marshal's Office is there today doing an investigation," Himes told The Inter-Mountain. "The house was vacant and there were no fatalities or any injuries as a result of the fire."

According to several neighbors who were at the scene, the house, which is located across the street from the entrance to Weese Street, has been sitting vacant for some time.

"I know there isn't any electricity in that house and it has been abandoned for many years," Ben Simmons, who lives on Weese Street and was a witness at the scene of the fire, told The Inter-Mountain Monday. "I was talking with some of the other people who were there watching and someone said they heard a loud bang just before the fire started."

Simmons said several volunteers working at the Randolph County Animal Shelter had to wait several hours to leave Diamond Street Sunday due to the road being blocked off while firemen battled the blaze. There is only one way in and out of both Diamond Street and Weese Street.

Several State Fire Marshal vehicles were parked along the street Monday next to the Diamond Street house in Elkins that burned Sunday.
