MILL CREEK — Two Randolph County Sheriff’s deputies and a civilian driver were injured in a two-vehicle collision in Mill Creek Saturday night, officials said.

The deputies were responding to a call in Mill Creek on Taylor Lane and collided with a full-size Dodge truck, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.

The truck’s driver was transported to Davis Medical Center for treatment, while three passengers in the vehicle were not injured, the release states.

Deputy A.B. Beverly and Deputy B.M. Roy was also transported to DMC, according to the release. Deputy Beverly was treated and released, while Deputy Roy underwent surgery for a broken femur and is still hospitalized.

Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon told The Inter-Mountain that both officers will need some time to recover.

“They are going to keep Roy in the hospital for a few days for observations, but they are both in good spirits,” Elbon said Monday. “Other than breaking his leg, Deputy Roy also had something with his knee where they had to do emergency surgery to fix both of those problems. They repaired his femur and worked on his knee and he is still in intensive care, but he’s doing OK.

“Deputy Roy is going to be out for months, while Deputy Beverly is going to be out for at least a couple weeks. I haven’t got any official word on Beverly yet, I know he had to get some stitches in his eye and some other things done.”

Elbon said he happened to be awake early Saturday morning when the call came across the police scanner about the accident.

“About 4 a.m. Saturday morning, I was already awake and heard the call,” he said. “I knew something was odd when I heard the firefighters talking, I could tell by their tone of voice that we had a situation. I know from dealing with the guys over the years when something is going on with some of our guys, I could just tell. I got a phone call from the Huttonsville-Mill Creek fire chief (Rodney McAtee) telling me it was my two deputies.”

Elbon said he immediately went to the site and was joined by Lt. B.A. Talkington and Chief Deputy B.T. Sharp, who assisted at the scene. The accident is being investigated by the West Virginia State Police.

“We have to secure weapons and do all kinds of things like that when something like this happens, so that’s what we did when we arrived on the scene,” said Elbon. “Deputy Roy told me he didn’t know if it was adrenaline or what, but after the wreck he got out of the car. He said he instantly fell to the ground because that’s when he knew he had some problems.”

Elbon said that emergency crews attempted to fly Roy to Morgantown, but that no helicopter could fly to the site due to the weather.

“I’m proud of the Randolph County Emergency Squad for doing a great job, as well as the Huttonsville-Mill Creek Fire Department and State Police, I want to give a shout out to all of them,” Elbon said. “They all did a heck of a job.”
