Light pillars in the Elkins morning sky

Photos courtesy of Randy England Randolph County resident Randy England took photos Tuesday morning of what he believed to be light pillars in the sky over downtown Elkins. Light pillars are an optical phenomenon caused when light is refracted by ice crystals, in which a vertical beam of light appears to extend above and/or below a light source. England said he took the photos at about 6:50 a.m. Local temperatures early this morning were as low as -13 degrees.
