ELKINS -- A local delegate, alongside 12 other delegates, introduced a house resolution, which would officially rename Spruce Knob to "Trump Mountain" after President Trump's death as a "lasting tribute to his legacy and enduring influence."
Elias Coop-Gonzalez, R-District 67 was among 12 other delegates who introduced House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 33 to the House of Delegates on Thursday, which states that, if the resolution is adopted, would "recognize the tallest point in the State of West Virginia, Spruce Knob, as 'Trump Mountain'… honoring the accomplishments of President Donald J. Trump."
If the resolution is adopted, Pendleton County's 4,863 feet high peak would be renamed five years after President Trump's death "in recognition of his lasting legacy and contribution to the people of West Virginia and the United States."
House Concurrent Resolution 203's preamble states that the people of West Virginia, "in overwhelming support," voted for Trump during the 2016, 2020 and 2024 General Elections, "reflecting a shared commitment to the values of freedom, economic prosperity and patriotism."
Citing Trump's "dedication to the state and its citizens has had a profound and lasting impact," and his support for the coal industry, job creation and infrastructure projects, the preamble states that he has been "crucial to the continued success" of West Virginia.
The preamble states that Spruce Knob symbolizes "strength, endurance and resilience," and attributed those qualities to the "leadership and perseverance" demonstrated by Trump.
Citing the naming of geographical features is "a tradition in the United States that reflects both the natural heritage and cultural history of a region," the resolution states that is it "fitting" that Spruce Knob be renamed "Trump Mountain" in honor of Trump's "service to our state, his impact on the nation and the loyalty of the people of West Virginia."
If adopted, the enactment of HCR 33 would see that the Clerk of the House of Delegates forward the resolution to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names for their consideration.
According to the enactment, the House of Delegates "encourages the citizens of West Virginia to reflect on the legacy of President Donald J. Trump and the lasting impact of his leadership on the state and the country."

Gonzalez has been appointed to the Standing Committee on Education, as well as the Subcommittees for Higher Education and Public Education.
