Comic from Elkins to play charity show

Jordan

ELKINS — A comedian from Elkins will return to town soon to present a comedy and magic show to raise money for charity.

The Tygart Valley United Way will host its first-ever “Laugh United” event on March 1 at the Myles Center for the Arts, Senate Commons on the campus of Davis & Elkins College.

The night of community and comedy will be headlined by award-winning illusionist, comedian and international speaker Joshua Jordan, who will bring his improvised, witty and jaw-dropping act to the stage.

“Joshua is the only performer we are having at the event and he will be doing illusions and comedy for everyone,” said TVUW Regional Engagement Director JoLynn Powers. “We will also have light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar at the event.

“We are going to have a VIP meet-and-greet available for the show and some other ticket and sponsorship packages.

“Joshua is from Elkins and that’s one of the reasons we booked him,” Powers said. “He grew up here, so it should be a really fun night for everyone.”

Powers hopes the event becomes an annual local event. All proceeds will benefit the United Way’s annual campaign.

“We would like to continue to have this event as an annual event fundraiser,” she said. “If everybody enjoys it and all goes well, we will try and do another Laugh United comedy-type event again. All the proceeds from the event will go to this year’s United Way Campaign that ends at the end of February. Hopefully this will help us reach our goal.”

Powers said the United Way is currently at about 90% of this year’s $600,000 goal. That money will be distributed to local nonprofits throughout the area.

“We are really hoping that this event pushes the thermometer over the 100% mark,” said Powers. “The United Way reached out to community and board members and asked them what was missing in the Randolph County area for entertainment. Having a comedy event was one of the ideas that came up as part of that conversation. We don’t get a lot of professional comedians in the Elkins area, you have to really travel quite aways to see stuff like this. So this is a unique opportunity for the community.”

The event is scheduled for 7 p.m., March 1, and a variety of tickets and sponsorship packages are available. For more information about the event, go online at laughunited.com or call 304-366-4550.

Starting at $3.92/week.
