ELKINS -- Two incumbent City Council members are set to face opposition in the June 10 city election after the filing period came to a close on Friday.
City Clerk Sutton Stokes said Jon Clingerman has filed to run against incumbent Fourth Ward council member Nanci Bross-Fregonara, and Burley Woods has filed to run against incumbent Fifth Ward council member David Parker.
The filing period for the election began Feb. 17 and ended on Feb. 28.
Clingerman teaches the Mill and Cabinetry high school program at the Randolph County Technical Center, while Woods has served as the director of Executive Service for the Nellis Group Enterprise, and the director of Internal Sales for Legacy Elevated.
Five of the 10 City Council seats are up for election this year, including the First Ward seat held by Rob Chenoweth; the Second Ward seat held by Lisa Severino; the Third Ward seat held by Erika Plishka; the Fourth Ward seat held by Nanci Bross-Fregonara; and the Fifth Ward seat held by Dave Parker. Council members serve four-year terms. All of the five council members have filed for re-election.
There will be no race for mayor in the 2025 election, according to the City Hall website, due to the 2021 charter change which states that the mayor of Elkins now has a four-year term limit. The current term, which began July 1, 2023, will not expire until 2027.
During the City Council's Feb. 20 meeting, the Council unanimously approved two new polling locations for Fourth and Fifth wards for the upcoming election.
In previous elections, the Fourth Ward polling place was in the Randolph County Commission meeting room at James F. Cain Courthouse Annex; however, the room is currently being renovated into a courtroom for Randolph County's second Circuit Court Judge Jaymie Godwin Wilfong.
The new Fourth Ward polling place will be the Wees Annex on 32 Randolph Avenue.
At the same time, the Municipal Courtroom in Elkins City Hall, which used to be the Fifth Ward polling place, is currently closed with the rest of the building for the foreseeable future.
The building is currently under renovation after it faced a sewage overflow incident on Aug. 31. The new Fifth Ward polling place will be the Old Brick Playhouse on 329 Davis Ave.
The polling places for the June 10 election include:
For First Ward, the Church of God Family Worship Center on 1402 Taylor Avenue;
For Second Ward, the Mountain State Forest Festival Building on 101 Lough Street;
For Third Ward, Elkins Inn and Suites, Randolph Room on 1200 Harrison Avenue;
For Fourth Ward, Wees Annex;
For Fifth Ward, Old Brick Playhouse.
