High Wind Damages
The Inter-Mountain photo by Anthony Gaynor Workers arrived on Sunday afternoon to try to repair the roof of the Phil Gainer Community Center in Elkins, which was damaged by high winds.
ELKINS — High winds tore chunks of roofing off the Phil Gainer Community Center Sunday, allowing rain to fall inside the building.
“The older section of roof at the Phil Gaynor Center blew off in the storm. There is debris scattered around the building,” Elkins City Clerk Sutton Stokes told The Inter-Mountain Sunday afternoon.
Asked if this was the same section of the roof that city officials had said would need to be repaired after the last major windstorm, Sutton replied, “That’s correct.”
The City of Elkins posted the following to social media just after 5 p.m. Sunday:
“After wind damage to the roof of the Phil Gainer Community Center this afternoon, City of Elkins is closing the road along the south/Flood Control side of the building. This is because the roof immediately above this roadway was damaged, and there is a risk of falling debris in that area.
“This closure will begin immediately and last until a roofing company can assess and stabilize the roof,” the post continued.
“Because this will affect pick up and drop off patterns at Elkins middle school, please see the below post from Elkins middle school describing the new traffic pattern that will be followed,” the post stated.
“We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.”
