ELKINS -- The Randolph County Commission approved a pair of proclamations for two important causes during its most recent meeting.
Commission President David Kesling was joined by fellow Commissioners Cris Siler and Chris See in voting unanimously to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Awareness Month in Randolph County.
Randolph County Prosecuting Attorney Michael was attending the meeting and was asked by Kesling if he wanted to speak about the proclamations.
"The Randolph-Tucker Children's Advocacy Center just had their Champions for Children dinner this past weekend, unfortunately I was out of town and unable to attend," Parker said. "But from what I saw on their Facebook profile, it seemed like it was extremely well-attended. Probably as well-attended as I can recall in the most recent years, so obviously that's a great thing. But we certainly request that the Commission adopt those proclamations and recognize our sexual assault victims and child abuse victims."
Kesling read from the Sexual Assault Awareness Month proclamation, saying, "Sexual violence is widespread and impacts every person in the community. We join advocates and communities across the country and take action to prevent sexual violence."
National Child Abuse Prevention Month, meanwhile, is recognized in the United States every April. During the month, organizations aim to raise awareness and promote efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect.
"Nearly five children die every day in America from abuse and neglect," Kesling read from the proclamation. "One in 10 children will be sexually assaulted or abused by the age of 18.
"The victory over child abuse and neglect will not be achieved without the support of the entire community," he continued reading. "Each April, the Randolph-Tucker Children's Advocacy Center, the Randolph County Partners in Prevention, and others supporters of the movement to end violence against children ask the community to join in outreach efforts to reduce and prevent child abuse."
The next Randolph County Commission meeting will be May 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wees Annex.
