BUCKHANNON -- A Georgia man is accused of unlawful assault and wanton endangerment after allegedly spraying two men with gasoline at West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Rayne Prince Marion Chuma, 22, of Dallas, Georgia, is charged with two counts of unlawful assault and two counts of wanton endangerment involving destructive devices, explosive materials or incendiary devices. Chuma was being held on an $40,000 property/surety bond, which has been posted.
According to the criminal complaint, prepared by Buckhannon Police Department Patrolman Wade Loudin, on April 2, Loudin and Sgt. Tom Posey were dispatched to the WVWC campus in reference to "a fight in progress."
When they arrived, Loudin made contact with Deshaun Davis, who told Loudin that he had been "sprayed in the face with gasoline." When asked by oudin as to who sprayed him, Davis said it had been Chuma, according to the complaint. Upshur County EMS was called to check Davis for injuries.
The complaint states that Posey spoke to Jaazaniah Worley, who stated that he and Davis had been "heading back to their rooms when Rayne came up to them and started spraying Davis in the face with gasoline in a cleaning spray bottle."
Loudin, according to the complaint, spoke with college security, who relayed that they had footage of the incident and would make the footage available to the police. Loudin also spoke with a staff member at the college who also stated that Chuma was the man who sprayed Davis.
While Davis and Worley were being transported to St. Joseph's Hospital for treatment, Worley, according to the complaint, told Loudin that Chuma had sprayed him as well, when Worley tried to separate Chuma and Davis.
According to the complaint, after locating and placing Chuma under arrest, Loudin conducted a search and located a spray bottle containing gasoline, a hammer and a chain with a lock on the end covered by a sock. All of the items were located in Chuma's backpack, the complaint states.
A preliminary hearing for Chuma is set for April 11 in Upshur County Magistrate Court.
