ELKINS -- The Elkins Fire Department will honor Tommy Hamrick, who served with the department for more than 30 years, with a funeral procession today, officials said.
Elkins City Clerk Sutton Stokes said the procession will begin on Randolph Avenue at the conclusion of Hamrick's funeral service, which will take place at Tomblyn Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Hamrick passed away on April 13 after fighting a short battle with cancer. He was 59 years old.
Hamrick was a member of the Elkins Volunteer Fire Department for 34 years. Volunteer firefighting was a huge part of his life, with him attending numerous fire expos with fellow firemen from Elkins and Belington. Hamrick also enjoyed vacations to the beach every year with fellow fire department families.
Elkins Fire Department Chief Steve Himes spoke highly of Hamrick during City Council's April 15 special meeting, when he informed officials of Hamrick's passing.
"We lost a member of the department over the weekend," Himes said. "Tommy had been a department member for 34 years, I believe, in January. He was a lieutenant for several years, (he) was a department training officer for a long time. (He) was very, very, very committed and very dependable for a lot of years, so this one hurts. So keep his family in your thoughts this week, cause we'll be taking him on his final ride this weekend."
Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco asked for a moment of silence during the April 15 council meeting in honor of Hamrick, telling Himes that everyone will be keeping Hamrick's family in their prayers.
During the meeting, Elkins Chief of Police Travis Bennett also extended the police department's sympathies for Hamrick's passing, expressing how the two departments will always have each other's backs.
"Chief Himes, just know you're in the police department's prayers," Bennett said. "We will always have you and your all's back through times like this, the exact same way you've had ours."
Memorial contributions can be made to the Elkins Volunteer Fire Department in memory of Hamrick.
