ELKINS -- A member of Boy Scout Troop 88 has earned Eagle Scout status, the highest award in Scouting.

Elliott James Harper received the award at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church on March 23. Elliott's community service activities have been focused on ministries such as Scouting for Food, Common Grounds Café and the Mountaineer Food Bank.

He is the son of Daniel and Lynn Harper of Elkins. He has two siblings, Holly and Grant. He is the grandson of Norma Harper of the Harding Community and Ester Perkins of Demont, Pennsylvania.

Elliott is the first Eagle Scout in his family. He began his Scouting in first grade as a Cub Scout in Pack 88.

He moved through the Cub Program, including attendance at Cub Scout Day Camp - Camp Mahonegon. When Elliott moved on to Troop 88, he began his climb to Eagle Scout.

Leadership is an important part of scouting. Elliott went back to Cub Day Camp and served as a Den Chief, helping to lead young Cubs beginning in their scouting experience.

In Troop 88, Elliott served as a Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.

In addition to leadership in scouting, Elliott has frequently served as an usher during worship services at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he is a lifelong member.

Elliott is an excellent student, carrying a 4.3 GPA in his senior year at Elkins High School. He especially enjoys digital technology and math.

He has been accepted at Fairmont State University, where he intends to study computer science/software development. He has been invited to join the honors program there.

Elliott is now the 130th Eagle Scout in Troop 88's history.

Earning the rank of Eagle Scout is known as the "Pinnacle of Scouting." The aims of Scouting are to foster character development, citizenship training, personal fitness, and leadership development.

Since its inception in 1911, only 4% of Scouts have earned the Eagle Scout rank after a lengthy review process. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, 14 of which are mandatory for the award.

Troop 88 meets at First United Methodist Church in Elkins, on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the Scout Room. Scott Harris is the Troop 88 Scoutmaster.
