God’s Closet free event planned for community Sunday

By Edgar Kelley 3 min read

ELKINS -- The Elkins Highland Adventist School and Church located in Highland Park will host a "God's Closet" free event Sunday at the school building, located on Kennedy Street in Highland Park.

The event, which will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., is open to the public and will offer free quality clothing to children in the Elkins area. Sizes newborn to teen, for both boys and girls, will be available. Each child will receive bags to put clothes in before entering the event.

"We have a couple of these events each year and the way that it works is that people from our community collect donations from other communities and they all contribute kids' clothing," said Highland Adventist School Principle Cheryl Jacko. "We collect from birth up to teenage years, and then we have volunteers from our church and the community come in and get it all organized to give away."

"We always put out good, clean, quality stuff for the children and parents to choose from," Jacko said. "We don't want to put something out there that isn't in good condition, or something that the kids might not wear."

Jacko said the amount of clothes the children have to choose from depends on the amount of donations God's Closet has received throughout the year.

"We don't seem to have as much this time around as we have had in the past, but we are still collecting and accepting donations all the way up until the day of the event," she said. "Typically, though, they get a couple bags and there is no charge for them to pick out clothes they want."

Jacko added there are also other items such as shoes and bedding for children to pick up at the event.

"We have a lot of different stuff for the kids and we invite the community to come out and get what they need for their children," she said. "And if anyone has anything to donate up until the time of the event, we would really appreciate it. We seem to be a little low on boys clothing this time around, so any boys clothing would help us out. We have a collection bin in our school and people are welcome to bring stuff out and drop it off anytime during the day."

Jacko said each one of the God's Closet events has been well-attended.

"We always have a lot of people come out and see us, usually around 100 people or so at each event," said Jacko. "This is much needed in our community, especially for those families with several kids. When they have to re-outfit them every year when they grow, it gets expensive for them. So it's very helpful to the families."
