‘Public Education Town Hall’ set for Monday in Elkins
ELKINS — A “Town Hall” on public education will be offered Monday in Elkins, although no representatives from the Randolph County Board of Education plan to take part, officials said.
Together For Public Schools West Virginia will hold a Public Education Town Hall Meeting and Q&A Monday at the Phil Gainer Community Center.
The event is scheduled to take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The event is being hosted by the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy, the American Federation of Teachers Randolph (ATF), and the Regional Certification & Accreditation Agency (RCEA).
A representative from Randolph County Schools confirmed to The Inter-Mountain on Wednesday that the school system isn’t part of, or involved with, the Town Hall meeting, which will feature union reps talking about public education and legislation.
Speakers for the event will include representatives from the West Virginia Center on Budget and Staff, West Virginia School Service Personnel Association, ATF-Randolph, and RCEA.
The Town Hall is part of a series of events Together For Public Schools West Virginia has recently hosted. Last Thursday, the organization held a session in Beckley in Raleigh County, and on Monday there was a Town Hall held in Parkersburg in Wood County.
According to its website, Together For Public Schools West Virginia is “a statewide coalition of organizations, individuals, parents and school staff that believes that every child in West Virginia should have access to high-quality education and a full array of educational and extracurricular services. Its priorities are to: Keep public funds in public schools; Strengthening school-based mental health supports; and create safe and restorative environments for every student.”
School staff, parents, students, and community members are encouraged to attend the Town Hall and learn about forces affecting public education in West Virginia.
The Randolph County Board of Education, meanwhile, will hold a special meeting today at 4 p.m. to address the country’s budget and personnel. A second special meeting to approve the budget and personnel actions will be held on May 29. Both meetings will be open to the public and are scheduled to take place at the BOE office.
