Rotary to offer International Festival Saturday

By Edgar Kelley 3 min read

ELKINS -- The Elkins Rotary Club will host its inaugural International Festival, with prizes being given away all afternoon long Saturday at the Rotary Amphitheater in Elkins Town Square.

The event, which will feature prize drawings, on-stage entertainment, food vendors, games and a beverage tent, will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tickets are available for the event and can be purchased from any Elkins Rotary member or by calling event chair Hoy Ferguson at 304-704-1693.

Tickets will also be available on the day of the festival, but are not needed to attend the event, patronize vendors, or participate in games, which includes Irish Road Bowling and a Cornhole Tournament.

Irish Road Bowling will begin at 9 a.m., and teams are asked to gather at the Railroad Dept at 8:30 a.m. for transportation to the tourney site on the Georgetown Road. The cornhole tourney is scheduled for 2 p.m. and is sponsored by Dawgpound Cornhole. There will also be children's games at the depot.

Thirty-seven prizes will be given away to ticket holders at the event. A Fire TV, outdoor pizza oven, Pittsburgh Pirates tickets, a Blackstone grill and cash are among some of the prizes that are up for grabs.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Randolph County School and Library Grants. Each year the Rotary awards grants to improve, enhance or benefit the local community. Past grants have gone to building composting bins at Tygarts Valley Middle/High School, theater upgrades at Elkins High School, a summer reading program at the Valley Head Public Library, and the planting and tending of a geometric raised bed at Jennings Randolph Elementary School.

"Our club is fortunate to have the support of many community businesses for this inaugural event," Ferguson said. "Key sponsors for the day include event sponsor, the Randolph County Commission, and hourly sponsors J.F. Allen Company, Blue Ridge Risk Partners Elkins and Vandalia Health. Davis Trust Company is sponsoring the entertainment for the event and Citizens Bank of West Virginia is sponsoring the Irish Road Bowling tournament."

The West Virginia Highland Dancers, Timmy White and J.B. Stalnaker, and a selection of native American and Celtic music will headline the event's entertainment. Participating vendors include The Forks (Appalachian), El Gran Sabor (Venezuelan), Gingrollsandpancit (Filipino), Smoke on the Water (BBQ), Southern Kitchen (Caribbean), Clementine's Cantina (TexMex), Graceland (French) and Pig Pen Catering (Italian).

"The Rotary Club of Elkins is pleased to support our local public schools and libraries by offering mini grants to help support specific projects," Elkins Rotary President Tammie Rizzio said. "Historically, projects supported have included materials for reading corners, the addition of buddy benches to playgrounds, software for gaming classes and much more.

"This year we are excited to be able to present these grants during our International Festival and to be able to share more broadly with the community what our schools are doing with these funds to support learning in our community. Our club has always taken a special interest in supporting the children in our community and this is one more way for us to do just that."
