ELKINS — As an international student-athlete who arrived at Davis & Elkins College in the fall of 2022, I was motivated by a strong curiosity and a desire to immerse myself in a new culture. Leaving my home country, Italy, in search of new opportunities was a decision full of both uncertainties and exciting possibilities, each offering a chance for growth and self-discovery.

Growing up in a family where Italian and Slovakian cultures come together, I have learned to see differences as strengths to be embraced, rather than obstacles. As a result, I have always approached international experiences and professional challenges with an open mind. Driven by curiosity, I explored opportunities to learn about new cultures, travel and connect with diverse European communities.

My passion for learning and growth led me to pursue my studies in the United States, starting here in West Virginia, where I look forward to expanding my intellectual and cultural horizons.

Becoming a student-athlete at this university was an eye-opening experience to see how sports and academics can combine well together. My soccer experience in Italy gave me a certain amount of experience, having played on high level teams and with the Slovakian national team on numerous occasions. However, in my previous experiences I had to choose whether to prioritize my athletic or academic life, as these two areas in Italy are considered to be in conflict.

In the United States, on the other hand, I discovered that there is a system in which these two areas complement each other and that I can excel in both my studies and my athletic activities.

My decision to continue my studies at Davis & Elkins College was driven by the institution’s commitment to preparing and inspiring students for success and thoughtful engagement in the world. This opportunity aligned perfectly with my desire to pursue academic excellence while growing as an individual and embracing a broader global perspective.

As I work toward my degree in Psychology and Human Services, with a minor in Spanish and Pre-Art Therapy, I’ve particularly enjoyed my work involvement with the Upward Bound program at Davis & Elkins College, helping in its mission to guide first-generation Appalachian students from low-income families achieve post-secondary success.

As the college’s slogan, “Leading the way,” suggests, I embraced the opportunity to engage with this mission by taking on various roles within the college. One valuable experience was my involvement with the Morrison-Novakovic Center for Faith and Public Policy, which aims to promote the common good by empowering students to engage with, challenge, and enhance the structures that contribute to the flourishing of all people.

Throughout my involvement, I encountered people from diverse backgrounds with unique perspectives and commitments.

Their stories have deeply influenced me, helping me understand how our diverse contributions strengthen and enrich our communities.

Despite the difficulties of being away from home and family, Elkins has become a second home to me over the years. I have found a strong and welcoming community, not only within the college but also in the town itself.

I will soon be completing my studies … and one of the most meaningful aspects of this experience is the connections and relationships that I have had the opportunity to build here, which have profoundly enriched my journey.

In conclusion, reflecting on my experience, I passionately believe that experiencing multiculturalism can profoundly enrich personal and professional life.

I invite you to value diversity and promote an inclusive approach in every aspect of life, by following the example of those who have managed to transform their multicultural roots into a steppingstone for a bright future.
