BUCKHANNON -- An Upshur County man faces 49 counts of felony charges after allegedly making more than $6,000 worth of fraudulent transactions.
Jared Nolan Bryant, 21, is charged with 49 counts of fraudulent use of an access device, a felony. He is currently being held at Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $10,000 surety/cash bond.
According to the criminal complaint filed by Cpl. F.J. Turansky with the West Virginia State Police, Turansky was approached by the alleged victim who advised he wanted to make a complaint "in reference to fraud."
The alleged victim told Turansky that, while being placed under arrest, he gave his bank card to a woman and "instructed her to use the card to post his bond," the complaint states. The alleged victim was incarcerated between March 7 and March 10, and after being released from jail, he noticed several "unauthorized transactions" had been made on that card.
The alleged victim told Turansky that he believed that the woman's son, identified as Bryant, was responsible as "one of the first fraudulent transactions is listed as Cash App Jared Bryant," the complaint states.
According to the complaint, the next week, the alleged victim provided Turansky with a copy of his bank statements. Turansky writes that he noticed 49 fraudulent purchases were made with a total amount of $6,059.56. The purchases were posted between March 10 and March 11.
On May 24, Turansky located Bryant and, during an interview, Bryant informed Turansky that, before the alleged victim went to jail, Bryant had assisted him with something on his phone. Bryant said that, in doing so, he gained access to the alleged victim's Google account, which stored the alleged victim's other accounts and passwords, the complaint states.
A preliminary hearing for Bryant is scheduled for today at Upshur County Magistrate Court at 2:30 p.m.
