Annual charitable cakewalks begin in Elkins Friday
ELKINS — A series of community fundraising cakewalks is set to kick off its fourth year with an event Friday evening.
Proceeds from Friday’s cakewalk event — which will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the Citizens Bank of West Virginia customer parking lot — will benefit Randolph County Meals on Wheels.
The mission of Meals on Wheels is to try to ensure that every eligible senior in need of a hot, nutritious meal receives one and within their financial means.
Their more than 40 volunteers deliver a hot meal to more than 80 clients per weekday and do so without any type of compensation.
Meals on Wheels is a registered 501(c)3 non profit organization with 13 volunteer board members, three paid part-time employees and 40+ volunteers, most of which have served for more than nine years.
The cakewalk will feature the Grand Prize Walk sponsored by Graceland Inn & Restaurant. In addition, 50/50 tickets will be for sale with the winning ticket being drawn at 7:30 p.m.
Citizens Promoting Community has been committed to raising money for various community organizations, and has raised more than $15,000 since its inception. Although CPC is not directly associated with Citizens Bank of West Virginia, the members appreciate the continued partnership to use its parking lot for these events.
Citizens Promoting Community will also be holding cakewalks on June 20, July 18, Aug. 1, and Aug. 15. This year, Citizens Promoting Community has added a new event to its lineup. A July 4 parade that will take place on Friday, July 4 at 5 p.m. and will lead downtown to the concert, car show and fireworks.
“We are very excited to be offering a July 4th parade this year, to further enhance the other July 4th activities that will be going on in downtown Elkins,” said Phillips Kolsun, president of Citizens Promoting Community.
The July 4th parade will feature cash prizes for a Bike Decorating Competition for children aged 12 and under. Cash prices will offered for the Float and Group Division and an ATV decorating contest.
