Elkins woman arrested in Md. on drug charges

CUMBERLAND, Md. — An Elkins woman was arrested by police in Maryland Saturday and was reportedly in possession of a “large quantity” of methamphetamine, officials said.

Kelly Jean Channell, 53, was charged with possession with intent to distribute controlled dangerous substances, possession of a large amount of CDS, four counts of possession of CDS (not cannabis), and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to a release from the Cumberland Police Department, on Saturday at approximately 8:17 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 68 westbound. The driver was identified as Channell.

“Police later discovered that Channell had an active arrest warrant through the” federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, according to the release.

“A police K-9 was utilized, which resulted in a positive alert for the odor of drugs,” the release states. “A search of the vehicle was conducted, and Channell was found to be in possession of a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine. Multiple other controlled dangerous substances were located as well.

“Channell was arrested and transported to Central Booking,” according to the release. “The warrant was used as a detainer, and Channell is currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.”
