ELKINS — Heavy rainfall in parts of Randolph and Barbour counties Friday night led to some events being canceled, including racing at the Elkins Raceway in Kerens, where flooding made it impossible for cars to take to the track Saturday.
“Everything now has pretty much receded and we are back to normal operations after parts of the county were hit pretty hard early this past weekend,” Barbour County Office of Emergency Management Deputy Director Dylan Harper told The Inter-Mountain Monday.
“Friday night into Saturday morning we saw some rain storms move through, mainly over the Audra, Volga, Philippi, Nestorville and Moatsville areas of the county. Those areas got anywhere from 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches of rain, which caused some widespread flash flooding throughout those areas. Several roads were washed out and we had several trees down.”
Parts of Barbour County were also hit during the previous weekend, leading to the cancellation of the annual Blue & Gray Parade on May 30 in downtown Philippi.
“We’ve definitely had our fair share of weather over the last few weeks,” Harper said. “This past weekend we didn’t have as many outages reported, just some high water in some of the creeks and streams.”

This past weekend’s Collins Service Center Street Stock Special Race and Autograph activities at Elkins Raceway will be rescheduled, after flooding at the track washed out this past weekend’s event. It was the third time this season — and the second weekend in a row — that races have been canceled due to rain.
Action is scheduled to resume on Saturday. Race updates can be found on Elkins Raceway’s Facebook page or by calling 681-513-0482.
The National Weather Service’s forecast for the Elkins area this week calls for a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, and then clear, sunny skies until late Friday afternoon, when there will be a chance of thunderstorms.
