ELKINS -- Fireworks and music will fill the air this weekend as Fourth of July celebrations are planned for several counties across the area.
Randolph, Barbour, Upshur and Tucker counties all have big events scheduled for both Friday and Saturday. Elkins will celebrate Independence Day on both days, as a slew of events are slated to take place downtown.
Elkins' events will get underway at 5 p.m. Friday with the Mountain State Street Machines' annual Pre-Car Show Cruise-in and a Parade organized by Citizens Promoting Community. The parade will start at the intersection of 11th Street and South Davis Avenue, and end at City Hall. Cars taking part in the cruise-in will line Railroad Avenue next to the Elkins Train Depot.
Our Town's Summer Concert Series will feature opening act Sodapopgypsies at 6 p.m. followed by Fleetwood Macked: The Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Tribute at 7:30 p.m. Both acts will perform on the Rotary Amphitheater stage.
At the conclusion of Fleetwood Macked's highly-anticipated performance, fireworks will light Elkins' downtown skies.
On Saturday, hundreds of classic cars, hot rods and more will line the streets of downtown Elkins for the annual Mountain State Street Machines Car Show. The show will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
At 11 a.m., there will be a dedication ceremony for the Elkins Gold Star Families Memorial Monument at the All-Veterans Memorial Park on Railroad Avenue. The monument, which was created in honor of Gold Star Families, was delivered to the site back on June 10.
The 249th Army Band will cap off the weekend's events with a 5 p.m. performance on the Rotary Amphitheater stage.
"We are excited about everything we have going on this weekend," Our Town volunteer Priscilla Gay told The Inter-Mountain. "We think Friday night will be fun for everyone with the cruise-in, concert, and fireworks display, which will be bigger and better than what we did last year. And we are proud to have the Army Band in for a show on Saturday. It should be an enjoyable weekend for everyone."
Also in Randolph County, the town of Harman will host a celebration on Friday beginning at 9 a.m. with vendors, crafters, flea market, yard sale, food trucks, music, bouncy houses, and a car and tractor show. There will be a parade at 2 p.m., and a performance from Sodapopgypsies at 8 p.m. Fireworks will begin at dark and chicken barbecue dinners will be available throughout the day.
Also on Friday, the City of Buckhannon will offer a Fourth of July celebration as part of its Festival Fridays event.
The celebration kicks off at 5 p.m. at Jawbone Park, with fireworks scheduled to light the sky at approximately 9:45 p.m. Live music from the Masons and Stonestreet, inflatables, a rock climbing wall, and a performance by the Elite Rivals Twirlers will be part of the entertainment.
Thomas and Barbour County both have Fourth of July celebrations planned for Saturday.
Action in Thomas will begin at 8 a.m. with a 5k/2k run and walk. Vendors and kids inflatables will be open at 10 a.m. on the Railroad Grade and there will be a kid's bicycle decorating contest at 10:30 a.m.
Beginning at 11 a.m., Thomas' list of performers will kick off with a set from Kelsey Jeffries. There will be a parade at noon and a cake walk at 1 p.m. Nat Frederick (2:30 p.m.), Jake Kohn (4 p.m.), the Jack Wharff Band (6 p.m.), and the Crowe Boys (7:30 p.m.) will make up the rest of the live performance schedule. Fireworks by the Thomas Volunteer Fire Department will begin at dark.
Barbour County's celebration will be held at the Barbour County Fairgrounds on Saturday and will get underway with ATV Races at 9 a.m.
There will be a 5k Mud Run at 10 a.m. and craft vendors will open for business at that time. There will be kids activities the entire day, and the band Electric Blue will perform at 7 p.m. Fireworks are scheduled to begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.
