Police: Two killed in Elkins wreck
ELKINS – Elkins Police Chief Travis Bennett confirmed to The Inter-Mountain Wednesday morning that two people were killed in a single-vehicle accident that occurred on North Randolph Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
Bennett said further details about the accident were not being released at this time, but that the crash was being investigated by the Elkins Police Department. No information about the victims has yet been released.
The incident occurred after 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. A Dodge pickup truck heading into Elkins apparently lost control and drove up onto the sidewalk, and then struck a retaining wall for the Elkins Rail Trail Connector Bridge, witnesses said.
The vehicle also crashed through a “Welcome to Elkins” sign before landing on its side and beginning to smoke, witnesses said. Witnesses on the scene tried to help remove the victims before emergency crews arrived and put out the flames, and applied the Jaws of Life to the truck.
The accident resulted in the northbound lane being temporarily blocked to traffic.
Elkins Fire Department, Randolph County Emergency Squad, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and West Virginia State Police assisted the Elkins Police Department at the scene of the rollover accident, which was called in to 911 at approximately 5:22 p.m.
