Pool/splash pad season to end after Labor Day

ELKINS — Another summer of fun in the sun will wind down this holiday weekend when the Randolph County Community Pool and Splash Pad closes its doors for the season on Monday evening.

The facility, which officially opened in May 2023, has been a popular spot for both locals and visitors to the community since its inception. The pool and splash pad will be open for three days this week, on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (Labor Day). The hours of operation will be from noon to 6 p.m.

“We are set to wind down another successful summer at the pool and are looking forward to a big weekend,” Randolph County Commission President David Kesling told The Inter-Mountain. “Like in the past, we were very happy with the staff and the lifeguards we employed this summer. We had a good group of employees.”

Kesling said everything went smoothly with the pool and splash pad this summer, despite a few hiccups during its opening back in May.

“We had a couple things, like some lines not making it through the winter, that we had to replace at the start of the season,” Kesling said. “But other than that everything went as planned and we had a lot of people come out and enjoy the facility again this summer.

“I have been up there several times this summer and attendance has been spot on. The County Commission is very happy with it, the Elks are very happy with it, and I know the community is happy with it.”

After the pool closes on Monday, personnel will begin getting the facility ready for the winter, Kesling said.

“We invested in a nice pool cover and we want to get that down before the leaves start to fall, that will save us additional work when we open back up and will keep the leaves from going into the pool and staining the liner,” he said. “We are also going to do some work on the flooring in the bath house, some of the paint on the floor has chipped away and we want to redo that before it gets any worse.”

Kesling said he wanted to add something that will provide shade to the splash pad area before the opening next spring.

“Everybody really enjoys the splash pad for the younger kids and right now we don’t have any shade in the area,” Kesling said. “So I would like to get something like a shade cloth cover to put up there, or something else where people can get some shade while visiting that part of the facility. Right now we have the shelter on the pool side, but we really don’t have any cover from the sun on the splash pad side. So we are going to look at over the winter and see what we can come up with.”

Kesling said the County Commission is also looking for a grant that will pay for a side of the pump house to be painted before next spring.

“There is one more side of the pump house we would like to get painted with a grant,” Kesling said. “There is one side still facing the road to finish so that all four sides will be painted. We would like to get Heather Johnson, who painted some of our others, to do it. She is the girl who also painted the big mural downtown at Mountain Valley Bank.”
