Rally set to celebrate workers Monday
ELKINS — The Randolph County Courthouse will be the scene for a nationwide protest on Labor Day billed as “Workers Over Billionaires.”
The local event is scheduled to begin at noon, and is part of a series of rallies that are taking place across the United States.
Cindy Stemple, Chair of the Randolph County Democratic Executive Committee, said everyone is encouraged to attend, no matter their political affiliation.
“Everybody is invited to come, we don’t care about political affiliation, this is about supporting our essential workers and showing that we are behind them,” Stemple told The Inter-Mountain.
“We all need to come together to fight what is going on, because everyone is going to get damaged by these policies that are out there. This isn’t a Democratic or Republican issue, this is a choice between what’s right and what’s wrong.”
Stemple pointed out that many workers close to home in Randolph County have recently been affected by what is going on in Washington.
“This nationwide effort is to bring attention to the fact that so many of our federal workers and other workers have been fired,” Stemple said. “We have been hit by that right here in Randolph County with employees with the Forest Service losing their jobs. They cut them, then they gave them their jobs back, only to cut them again. So we are standing up for workers and standing up for fair pay.”
Stemple added that the average worker is the backbone of the United States and that Monday’s rally wants to help highlight that fact.
“There seems like there is just no respect anymore for the average worker,” Stemple said. “The American worker is the backbone of this country and it seems like the average worker isn’t really respected anymore – the ones who really keep this country going. So we are going out to voice our support for them.”
Stemple said the rally is also being held to protest what she said is the “biggest transfer of wealth” ever to occur in the United States.
“With Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill, we have had the biggest transfer of wealth ever, from the bottom to the top,” Stemple said. “So many people are losing the support systems that they have and it’s all to give the wealthiest people in this country more tax breaks. And that’s exactly what is happening, the tax breaks are going to the wealthiest 1%. The rich need to be taxed and the large corporations need to be taxed. We want people to have a fair shake and get paid what they earn and not be sucked dry by the federal government.”
Stemple revealed that the musical group the Ginsangers will be performing during the rally and is encouraging anyone with instruments to bring them out to the event.
“I have some sheet music that I will be passing out at the rally and we may sing some of the songs on it,” Stemple said. “We’ve had bagpipes, drums and other instruments at some of our past rallies and I encourage those coming out to bring whatever they can. Anybody is free to play their instruments.”
