BUCKHANNON — Three Upshur County men each face a felony charge after allegedly breaking into a man’s home and assaulting him in June.

Jaime Navarrete Jr., 19, Charles Matthew Luke Merriman, 20, and Jacob Nathaniel Kincaid, 21, are each charged with one count of burglary, a felony.

Merriman, Kincaid and Navarrete were each being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on separate $25,000 surety/cash bonds, but those have since been posted.

According to the criminal complaints filed by Sgt. Darin K. Hissam and Sgt. W.J. Courtney with the Buckhannon City Police Department, on June 23, officers responded to a residence on Island Avenue in reference to “a subject that had been attacked” inside his home. Upon making contact with the alleged victim, officers were informed that Navarrete, Merriman and Kincaid had entered the residence and attacked the alleged victim when he returned from work.

The alleged victim told officers that he and Navarrete had gotten into a verbal altercation outside of the residence, the complaints state. The alleged victim then went inside the residence, shutting the door behind him. Navarrete then, allegedly, “removed the screen” from a nearby window and “jumped into the residence.” The alleged victim said he then moved further into his residence while Navarrete followed behind him.

The alleged victim told officers that, when he reached the staircase, other subjects “emerged from inside the residence,” the complaint states.

Navarrete and the other subjects then, allegedly, began attacking the alleged victim, according to the complaint.

Hissam and Courtney both write that the alleged victim had “multiple red lumps,” a scratch on his back and a small cut on his left hand. Navarrete, Merriman and Kincaid were identified after the officers spoke with the alleged victim and his partner, who had been home at the time of the incident.

In the complaints filed by Courtney, he writes that Merriman admitted during an interview that he had been involved in an altercation with the alleged victim, and confirmed that Kincaid had also been involved.
