Upshur man accused of felony extortion
BUCKHANNON — An Upshur County man faces a felony charge after allegedly threatening to disclose private videos and photos of a woman on a website.
Cody Lane, 33, is charged with extortion or attempted extortion by threats, a felony. He was originally being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $10,000 property/surety bond that has been posted.
According to the criminal complaint, filed by Deputy R.T. Lamb with the Upshur County Sheriff Office, on July 23, Lamb received a walk-in complaint regarding Lane. The alleged victim stated that Lane had been disclosing and threatening to disclose private sexually explicit images and videos of the alleged victim onto a website on July 15.
The alleged victim showed the officer messages between her and Lane that depicted threats to post the videos and photos onto an anonymous sexually explicit website, the complaint states. Lane then allegedly said he did post explicit and embarrassing photos of the alleged victim on the website and told her to “Find ‘Em.”
Lane continued to threaten to post more photos and videos onto the website, as well as sending the alleged victim one of the photos of her he had allegedly already posted, the complaint states.
According to the complaint, Lane then told the alleged victim, “I’ll delete them when he comes and faces me…,” referring to the alleged victim’s current partner. Lane also directed the alleged victim’s current partner to meet him at the Whistle Stop Bar and Grill to fight and “come handle it.”
The alleged victim told the officer that Lane was threatening her with the release of these videos and photos in order to get the alleged victim’s partner to fight Lane, the complaint states.
Lamb writes in the complaint that the alleged victim told him that Lane’s actions caused her to be “uncomfortable, suffer embarrassment and humiliation to her character.” The alleged victim also told Lamb that she felt harassed, degraded and stressed, and had been experiencing anxiety due to Lane’s actions.
