Upshur man facing felony charge

BUCKHANNON — An Upshur County man faces a felony charge after allegedly using his father’s bank account without permission to send money to a third party.
Jonathan Derik Reed, 21, is charged with one count of fraudulent use of an access device, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $10,000 surety/cash bond.
According to the criminal complaint filed by Sgt. Theron Caynor with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, on July 23, Reed allegedly was at his father’s residence in Buckhannon when Reed used his brother’s phone to access their father’s bank account.
Using the device, Reed allegedly used the application Cash App to forward $100 from his father’s bank account to an acquaintance. Caynor writes that Reed did not have his father’s permission to forward that money.
On July 28, the acquaintance who received the $100 and another witness gave a statement under oath to Caynor, the complaint states. The witness told Caynor that Reed had said he would be sending money “from his work.”
The acquaintance and the witness later picked Reed up to “hang out,” and the acquaintance took the $100 out of her account and gave it to Reed, according to the complaint.
Caynor writes that, after looking into who sent the money to the acquaintance, the name that appeared was that of the alleged victim, Reed’s father, however the alleged victim “did not give any permission for his card to be used.”
A preliminary hearing for Reed has been scheduled for today at Upshur County Magistrate Court.
