PARSONS — More than 300 children and parents attended the Parsons Volunteer Fire Department’s Open House on Tuesday evening, ahead of the annual Parsons VFD Homecoming Fair.
The Open House was offered at the Parsons Fire Station at 6 Main Street Tuesday afternoon. The event kicked off the annual Parsons VFD Homecoming Fair, which is believed to have begun in 1941.
“We got great comments all evening,” Parsons Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kevin White told The Inter-Mountain. “No one left unhappy.”
Hosted by the Parsons Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary, and provided by the PVFD membership, the Open House was completely free to the public. Kids were able to play on bouncy houses, play games and win prizes, check out the fire station and the fire trucks, and more.
The support of local businesses also allowed for the kids to enjoy the event free of charge. St. George Medical Clinic ran games and provided prizes to give away, while Kingsford Manufacturing Company supplied and grilled hotdogs outside of the fire station. Popcorn, cotton candy and shaved ice were also given out during the event.
“A lot of these kids will probably not get to go to the festival,” White said. “So we wanted to bring a little bit of the festival to them.”
White explained that it is believed that more than 300 kids and parents attended Tuesday evening’s event, based on the number of items the department gave away. White also said he heard there was an excited buzz among students in the schools after fliers for the event were handed out the day before.
The annual PVFD Homecoming Fair began Tuesday with the Open House and will run until Saturday. The Fair features carnival rides by Gambill Amusements, vendors, bingo and nightly music performances.
Tonight, Beyond the Barrier will perform at the Parsons Downtown Stage from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Friday, Hair Supply will play from 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., and Saturday will see a performance by the Soda Pop Gypsies from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday will also see the annual Homecoming Fair parade, which will begin at 2 p.m.
