ARTIE — Longtime Tygarts Valley Middle/High School Principal Steve Wamsley will be honored today when he is inducted into the West Virginia Sports Legends Hall of Fame in Raleigh County.
The ceremony, which is scheduled for 11 a.m., will be held at the Artie Museum under the direction of well-known coach Tex Williams, who will be Master of Ceremonies. Randolph County native Butch Antolini will serve as the presenter for Wamsley’s induction.
Wamsley, who is a 1979 graduate of Tygarts Valley High School and one of the most decorated athletes to ever wear a Bulldogs uniform, said it was an honor to be inducted into the Sports Legends Hall of Fame.
“I was shocked when I found I was being inducted,” Wamsley said. “I’ve always been involved in athletics in West Virginia in one way or another, and it’s an honor to be going into the West Virginia Sports Legends Hall of Fame.”
While at Tygarts Valley High School, Wamsley was a standout in baseball, basketball and football. He was an All-State selection in each sport, and scored 1,583 career points on the hardwood. He played quarterback and defensive back for the football team, and was a member of the Class AA-A unbeaten back-to-back state champion baseball teams at Tygarts Valley in 1978 and 1979.
During his time with the Bulldogs baseball squad, Tygarts Valley tallied 47 consecutive wins. Wamsley was a first-team All-State selection as a junior and senior. He was undefeated on the mound during his high school career with a 21-0 pitching record, a mark that is still in the national high school record books.
Wamsley was also on the 1977 Elkins American Legion state championship team and the Elkins Babe Ruth state championship squad in 1975.
“I was very fortunate to play with a lot of good people,” Wamsley said. “And I also had a lot of good coaches along the way.”
Despite receiving multiple offers to play Division 1 college baseball, Wamsley decided to stay closer to home after graduating from high school and chose to attend Davis & Elkins College, where he starred in both baseball and basketball.
After his college graduation, Wamsley went on to teach and coach in Randolph County, where he compiled 222 wins and 13 sectional titles as a head basketball coach at Tygarts Valley and Elkins High School.
Wamsley, who has been the principal at Tygarts Valley Middle/High School since 2007, is currently the Vice President of the West Virginia Secondary Schools Association Board of Directors, and is the Chair of the WVSSAC Constitution and By-Laws Committee.
Wamsley is the son of Andy Wamsley and the late Janice Wamsley, Steve and his wife Lisa reside in Valley Bend and are the parents of two adult children, Rece and Tatum. His brother, Tom Wamsley, has been the Tygarts Valley boys basketball coach for the past 35 years and has more than 400 career coaching victories.
