Man facing a firearm charge

ELKINS — A Monongalia County man faces a felony charge after he was allegedly found to be illegally in possession of a firearm in Elkins.
Corey Andrew McCabe, 32, of Morgantown is charged with prohibited person in possession of a firearm, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond.
According to the criminal complaint filed by PFC D. T. Sayre with the Elkins City Police Department, on Oct. 11, Sayre was conducting a patrol on Second Street in Elkins when he observed a black vehicle outside of an apartment complex. After running the vehicle’s license plate through Randolph County 911, Sayre was informed that the vehicle was owned by a wanted person, identified as Lindsey Dawn Walls.
After receiving video footage from Seneca Realty, which allegedly showed Walls enter the apartment building with two male subjects, Sayre and Patrolman J.H. White with the Elkins City Police went to the residence, the complaint states. The apartment tenant told Sayre and White that she would check and see if Walls was still in one of the bedrooms.
As the tenant opened the door to the apartment, a subject later identified as McCabe stepped out and “appeared to be irate” that Sayre and White were there, the complaint states. McCabe was detained “due to these actions and outbursts.” After detaining McCabe and Walls outside the apartment, officers located a digital scale, aluminum foils used for packaging and “ingestion of illicit substances,” currency, a white substance consistent with fentanyl, a “drug ledger” in Wall’s purse and a firearm under a mattress.
Sayre writes that he found a Sig Sauer P365 with a loaded magazine, and after running the serial number, it was revealed that the gun had been stolen out of Monongalia County. Sayre had Randolph County 911 run criminal background checks on McCabe and Walls, which revealed that McCabe had a conviction of domestic battery first offense in 2016, a conviction for domestic battery second offense in 2016, and a conviction for domestic battery third offense in 2019.
Before being taken from the apartment complex, McCabe and Walls allegedly admitted to the officers that they had both ingested one baggie each of a “powdery substance they believed was fentanyl,” the complaint states. Both were taken to Davis Medical Center for evaluation before being discharged and transported to Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
