Traffic stop leads to felony drug charge

BUCKHANNON — An Upshur County woman faces two felony charges after methamphetamine was allegedly found on her during a traffic stop.
Lacy Leeida Russell, 38, is charged with delivery of methamphetamine and possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, both felonies. She is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
According to the criminal complaint, filed by Cpl. Tyler A. Gordon with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, on Sept. 30, Gordon observed a pickup truck pull onto Route 20 South Road from Crooked Run Road in Upshur County. The vehicle was equipped with a “loud and defective exhaust,” the complaint says, and Gordon initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle.
The driver was identified as a male subject and the passenger was identified as Russell, the complaint states. Both the male subject and Russell consented to Gordon searching the vehicle. During his search, Gordon allegedly located approximately 10.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine, which was valued at approximately $1,000, inside of Russell’s purse wallet.
After advising Russell of her Miranda Rights, Gordon was given consent to search the contents of Russell’s cellphone, the complaint states. Gordon writes that he allegedly located “numerous” messages that indicated Russell was “currently engaged in the sale and/or delivery of methamphetamine.”
Gordon also writes in the complaint that he located a message between Russell and another male subject which indicated that Russell had given the male subject a small amount of methamphetamine to smoke. Russell allegedly admitted to delivering the methamphetamine to the second male subject.
A preliminary hearing for Russell has been scheduled in Upshur County Magistrate Court.
