Firefighters battling blaze in Monongahela National Forest

CHERRY GROVE – Multiple local volunteer fire departments, along with some from as far away as Virginia, are responding to a wildfire in the Monongahela National Forest.

The Pendleton County WV Office of Emergency Management/911 put out several statements on social media regarding the wildfire Wednesday afternoon.

“Multiple fire crews at a wildfire in Southwest Pendleton County, near Cherry Grove,” the Pendleton County OEM stated on social media at 1:21 p.m. Wednesday. “Battling extreme steep mountain terrain. Mostly on Monongahela National Forest. Numerous VFDs from Pendleton, Pocahontas and Highland Counties in (Virginia) and National Forest Fire crews are battling the fire in extreme winds on a Red Flag Day.”

At 3 p.m. the Pendleton County OEM posted that the fire “burning in the Vance Run/Big Mountain area near Cherry Grove continues to burn.” The office stated that “at this time” no structures are threatened by the fire.

Later, the OEM reported that “fire crews in Pendleton County are responding to a second wildfire in the Strauter Road area, north of Franklin.” The fire reported at 3:33 p.m., officials said.
