ELKINS — In preparation to help transform Elkins into Elfkins, members of Our Town Inc. spent this past Saturday morning placing an array of painted wooden elves along several downtown city streets.
Close to 40 wooden elves were anchored to poles on Davis Avenue, Third Street and Railroad Avenue.
“For the holidays, Elkins become Elfkins, so in preparation for that transition, we put out all the elves that have been made by members of the community over the past few years,” Our Town volunteer Bobbi Trimboli told The Inter-Mountain. “Not all of the elves we had stored could be put out, because some of them had been damaged and all of the three-piece elves that went out were the ones Alan Kerns refurbished and fixed for us before he passed away.”
Kerns spent countless hours painting matching pants for each one of the three-piece figures that were designed last year. Kerns, who passed away in August 2024, was one of Our Town’s most active members.
In addition to the three-piece elves, there are two-piece elves featuring just hats and sweaters, and one-piece miniature elves that were put on display.

“There are different designs and different varieties of elves that we put out,” Trimboli said. “They are all really creative and we put all of them out that were usable.”
Trimboli said once the holiday season is complete, the elves will be taken down and donated to Citizens Promoting Community.
“Like some of the other things we do, we did not sell any of the elves back to the public,” Trimboli said. “And we are not going to sell any of them that we have put out. After we take them down at the end of the holiday, we are going to turn them over to the Elfkins Committee so they can be used in the future. We are going to donate them to their group.”
The first major event celebrating Elfkins will be on Nov. 29, when a “Blue Christmas Celebration” is held at Elkins City Hall. The event will feature a visit from Elfkins’ official Elf Snickle, a Tree Lighting Ceremony honoring local heroes, and more.
The second big event is on Dec. 5 when the annual Christmas Parade takes place followed by the lighting of a 22-foot Christmas tree in Elkins Town Square by Mayor Jerry Marco and his wife, Paula. The evening will be filled with additional activities including a visit from Santa Claus.
