Courthouse project grants are received

ELKINS — The Randolph County Commission has secured two grants that will be used for an upcoming project at the historic Randolph County Courthouse.

The Commission was awarded a $100,000 grant from the West Virginia Courthouse Facilities Improvement Authority, and also a $37,000 grant from the West Virginia Office of Energy.

The money will go toward the County Commission’s Courthouse Window Replacement Project. that has an estimated cost of $195,000, Commission President David Kesling said.

“I am always looking for ways to make sure the county’s facilities are stable for the next 25, 35 to 50 years, not only financially, but facilities wise as well,” Kesling told The Inter-Mountain.

“One of my main focuses has been and will continue to be improvements to the main Randolph County Courthouse. We want to make sure it’s up to date in every area possible. After we get the window project complete, we would like to start working on getting our technology up-to-date. We are definitely playing catch-up as far as technology goes.”

With $137,000 of the $195,000 needed for the project coming from state and federal grants, the difference will be provided by funds the county has been putting aside for the upcoming renovations.

“We have some funding set aside for improvements,” Kesling said. “We had a lot more before we had to make renovations for the county’s second judge. We are still hoping at some point down the road we can also do something with the old Randolph County Jailhouse.

The Courthouse Window Replacement Project, which consists of the replacement of 71 windows in the main Courthouse building, will be put out for public bid in early January, with hopes of a completion date sometime in the spring or early summer of 2026, officials said..
