Morrisey gives state workers more time
ELKINS — State workers in West Virginia will now be getting more time off during the last remaining holiday of 2025.
Governor Patrick Morrisey issued a proclamation granting West Virginia employees a full day off on Friday. State workers are already in line to receive a half day off today (New Year’s Eve) and a full day off on New Year’s Day (Thursday).
“The dedication of our state employee is truly remarkable,” Morrisey said in press release. “They work tirelessly year-round serving the people of West Virginia with professionalism and heart. I hope they are all able to use this extended time off to ring in the New Year with their loved ones and enjoy a well-deserved break.”
All state employees will receive Jan. 2 off without charge against their accrued annual leave. It is the second time this month that the governor has given state workers some extra time off.
Just before Christmas, Morrisey issued a proclamation that granted West Virginia employees the full day off on both Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) and the day after Christmas (Dec. 26). That time off also did not affect workers’ accrued annual leave.
This week’s action applies only to employees of West Virginia and does not affect private businesses, local governments, or other entities.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring Dec. 24 and Dec 26 as holidays for federal employees.
As of Tuesday, those working for the federal government were still scheduled to work the day before and after New Years Day. Jan. 1 is a scheduled federal holiday.
