Airplane crashes in Barbour
PHILIPPI — The Barbour County Office of Emergency Management confirmed that a single-engine airplane crashed at the Philippi/Barbour County Regional Airport on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Barbour County OEM, the accident took place around 12:30 p.m. and there was just one occupant on board the plane at the time of the crash.
No one was injured as a result of the accident, and the cause of the crash is under investigation, according to officials.
“We had a single-engine plane accident with no patients being transported due to injuries,” Barbour County Office of Emergency Management Deputy Director Dylan Harper told the Inter-Mountain on Thursday.
“There’s an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the crash. We are waiting on an inspector from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and that’s all we have right now.”
Harper could not provide any other details about the crash, but was still present with other emergency responders at the airport at 3:15 p.m., as the scene remained active at that time.
According to reports, officials said the pilot was flying from New Jersey to Kentucky and was landing at the airport when the plane’s brakes failed, causing the plane to leave the runway and go down an embankment.
The Philippi/Barbour Airport is a public, general aviation facility with one asphalt runway for private planes and training. It is located in close proximity to the former Alderson Broaddus University and is used by local organizations, offering self-serve fuel and basic services.
