Elkins officials preparing to honor America
ELKINS — Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco is asking for ideas from Elkins City Council and the public regarding the city’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence this summer.
Marco has invited council representatives, as well as all residents, community groups and local organizations, to offer up any ideas or suggestions on how the City of Elkins should celebrate America’s upcoming semiquincentennial birthday on July 4.
“We already have organizations that are going to be recognizing and doing celebrations for the Fourth of July, but we think this is an opportunity for the city to step up as well and do something in observance of 250 years of America,” Marco said during a recent council meeting. “So, we’re going to put together a meeting. I would like to have your ideas, your feedback about what the city can do… Is there something the city can do to emphasize this moment in history?”
Marco said that he would like to see the celebration complement the annual Fourth of July car show, parade, concerts and fireworks that are put together by community organizations.
In a memo to the council, Marco suggested that potential ideas might include special musical guests or performances, involvement of local or regional artists, a local history or educational component or other civic, ceremonial or educational elements.
“The 250th anniversary of our nation is more than a date; it’s a chance for Elkins to come together, celebrate our shared heritage, and create new memories for future generations,” Marco said in a press release. “The best ideas come from our community, and I encourage everyone to bring their creativity and passion to this planning session. How can we, as a city, honor this monumental occasion in a way that is meaningful to us?”
The city scheduled a public brainstorming session at the Phil Gainer Community Center for any and all members of the public to help plan for the celebration.
The meeting, however, was postponed due to inclement weather. The public will be notified when the meeting is rescheduled, officials said.
