Grocery stores help customers prep for storm

RANDOLPH COUNTY — With what is projected to be a severe weekend winter storm on its way, local grocery stores have been dealing with throngs of customers looking to stock up on perishable items before the snow flies.

The Elkins Shop n’ Save on the Beverly Five Lane has already seen a large amount of shoppers coming in and loading up in preparation for the storm.

“We’ve been really busy today,” Shop n’ Save Cashier Manager Kathy Lanham told The Inter-Mountain on Thursday. “I wasn’t here yesterday, but I was told that we were really busy yesterday too.”

The store has stocked up extra on products in response to the NWS alert,Lanham explained. Unsurprisingly, the two items that are currently in very high demand at the store are bread and milk.

“I mean, people are just coming in here and buying 10 full gallons of milk and six to eight loaves of bread,” Lanham said. “We’re trying. We’re doing the best we can do.”

Lanham also stated that there wasn’t much concern that the store could run out of certain products before the storm arrives on Saturday. She said the bread delivery driver is scheduled to drop off products to the store every day and the milk delivery driver would be returning for another drop-off Friday evening.

When asked what she would recommend people stock up on before the storm arrives, Lanham stated it’s best to get the basics, like bread, milk, potatoes, etc.

Across Randolph County, Coalton Country Market owner Wilma Anderson says her store is stocked up and ready to take on whatever Mother Nature has to dish out over the weekend.

The Coalton Country Market, which is the only convenience store located in the small Randolph County community, is open six days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is closed on Sundays.

“We are stocked up as much as we are going to be,” Anderson said. “It’s hard to keep up when you have something like ‘Snowmageddon” going on. But we have enough stuff to get us through the weekend and into Monday… We will be open all day on Saturday and be back on Monday. We are always closed on Sunday.”

Anderson said many residents in Coalton have already been stopping by and grabbing milk, eggs, bread and other items in preparation for the weekend storm.

“We’ve had several people stopping and grabbing the basic items,” Anderson said. “We are still stocked up with convenience items and we also have a great selection of cooked food. We have calzones, pizza, hot dogs, meatball hoagies, pepperoni rolls, soup and many more things people can stop in and get. If it gets bad and people need a place to eat and they can’t make it into Elkins, they can stop by here and we will always have something hot for them.”

Anderson said the store has plenty of water for anyone who has issues with their water freezing up this weekend.

“It’s horrible. I’ve been there before, when you wake up in the morning and your water is frozen,” Anderson said. “You have to have water, so if anyone has any issues they can stop at the Market and pick some up, we have plenty.”

Anderson said the store also has flashlights, batteries and other items that will help residents if there is a loss of power.

“We might see some power outages with all that heavy snow they are calling for,” Anderson said. “Hopefully that won’t happen, but if it does we will have flashlights and other items people may need.”

The Coalton Country Market, which opened in the spring of 2025, is located on Broadway Avenue in downtown Coalton. For more information, call the store at 304-444-0597.
