PICKENS -- The Pickens archery team made a strong showing at the Shot in the Park 3D and Bullseye Tournament at the Highlands Sports Complex in Wheeling earlier this month.
More than 850 archers competed in the tournament that featured 66 teams from three different states, including West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The field was made up of archers in the fourth through the 12th grades. The top 10 finishers in each division captured awards.
"The tournament in Wheeling is one of the bigger ones we compete in each year," Pickens archery coach Melody Greenway told The Inter-Mountain. "With so many teams and individuals taking part in the tournament, there was some really good competition. I was super proud of the way our kids performed."
Eighteen of Pickens' 27 students at the school are currently on the archery squad.
Brianna Greenway finished in fifth place for Pickens in the elementary girls 3D competition. Breanna Carpenter placed ninth in the elementary girls bullseye event and sixth in elementary girls 3D. Teammate Hannah Tiffer finished in seventh place for high school girls 3D.
The Pickens archery team officially opened the season in November and is currently in the midst of the tournament portion of its schedule. The team will travel to Buckhannon for a tournament on Jan. 31 before hosting its own tourney in Pickens on Feb. 7.
"We are just kicking off the tournament season," Greenway said. "We are excited to be hosting our own tournament on Feb. 7; this is at least the 10th year in a row that we have been doing that."
Greenway said the team's ultimate goal is to get as many archers as possible to the West Virginia State Tournament, scheduled at the Charleston Civic Center in March.
"We can qualify both individuals and a team to the state tournament," Greenway said. "We typically send quite a few students to the state tournament and hopefully we can do the same again this year."
