Randolph girl abducted by parents now safe

ELKINS — A 7-year-old Randolph County girl has been found safe in South Carolina after being abducted by her biological parents over the weekend, officials report.

According to a press release from the West Virginia State Police, on Friday, Jan. 9, troopers with the West Virginia State Police Elkins Detachment initiated an investigation into an alleged child abduction in Randolph County.

Personnel from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WVDHHR) reported that a 7-year-old child under the program’s legal custody was abducted from the Elkins area by her biological father, Darries L. Fauntleroy, 40, and her biological mother, Megan R. Fauntleroy, 40, the release states. Both Darries and Megan Fauntleroy are from Montrose in Randolph County.

WVDHHR alleged that neither Darries and Megan Fauntleroy had legal custody of the child, and that Megan Fauntleroy was “prohibited from being in the presence of the child,” the release states.

The Fauntleroys removed the child from the area and were believed to have fled to South Carolina, the release states. Troopers actively investigated the case in coordination with the United States Marshals Service and local law enforcement agencies in South Carolina.

On Sunday, Jan. 11, Darries and Megan Fauntleroy were located and taken into custody in Kingstree, South Carolina, by officers with the Kingstree Police Department, the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Marshals Service, the release states.

“The child was safely recovered and is currently in the custody of South Carolina Department of Social Services, pending a safe return to WVDHHR,” the release from the West Virginia State Police reads.

Both Darries and Megan Fauntleroy are currently being held pending extradition to West Virginia as fugitives, the release states.

Darries and Megan Fauntleroy are each charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of taking a minor child from a custodian, both felonies.
