Tucker County’s last coal mine to close
DAVIS — Workers at the Mettiki Coal Mountain View Mine in Tucker County reportedly learned on Thursday that the mine is permanently closing on April 1.
The Tucker County Commission received a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice from the company that its 199 workers will be laid off with the closure. The WARN notice helps ensure advance notice in cases of qualified plant closings and mass layoffs.
Mettiki Coal LLC is a subsidiary of Alliance Resource Partners and is one of Tucker County’s biggest employers. The mine previously moved from Garrett County, Maryland to its Tucker County location in 2006.
Tucker County Commission President Mike Rosenau said the closing is devastating to the county and that the Mettiki Mine was the only coal mine left in Tucker, according to reports. Grant County will also be affected by the closure, as it will lose coal severance taxes it receives from coal reserves from the mine being in that county. The mine produces approximately 3.26 million tons of raw coal annually.
