HAMBLETON — A home in Tucker County was deemed a total loss after emergency crews battled a structure fire off of West Virginia Route 72 earlier this week.

The Parsons Volunteer Fire Department was alerted to a fire at a residence at 8:43 p.m. Monday evening. Upon their arrival, crews encountered heavy fire conditions, with the home fully engulfed, officials said.

Severe weather conditions from a cold front that moved through the area complicated firefighters’ efforts. Crews not only had to battle the extreme heat from the blaze, but also contend with temperatures in the teens and wind gusts exceeding 45 miles-per-hour, which created subzero wind-chill conditions.

“The extreme wind gusts drove the fire aggressively, causing it to not only pose a threat of damaging adjacent structures, but also sparking spot fires in trees on a separate property down the road,” Parsons Fire Chief Kevin White said. “Firefighters initiated an immediate defensive attack, working exhaustively to contain the rapidly spreading flames and protect the surrounding neighborhood from wind-driven embers.”

Despite the fire resulting in the home being a total loss, all occupants in the residence safely vacated the premises before emergency crews arrived on scene.

No firefighters were injured while battling the blaze, officials said.

The Parsons Volunteer Fire Department received assistance from the Leading Creek Fire Department, Davis Volunteer Fire Department, Thomas Volunteer Fire Department, Tucker County OEM 911, Tucker County EMS, West Virginia State Police, West Virginia Division of Highways, Parsons VFD Ladies Auxiliary, Hendrick Free Methodist Church, and Carl Hanline Transporting Inc.
