Upshur bus wrecks on ‘black ice’

ADRIAN — One student was transported to the hospital after an Upshur County Schools bus wrecked on black ice on Route 20 Thursday morning, police said.
The Upshur County Sheriff’s Office released information about the single-vehicle wreck, saying, “The bus driver struck black ice and lost control of the bus, which went up on the embankment.
“The driver and 25 school-age children were on the bus at the time of the crash,” the release states. “One child was transported to the hospital, while the others were checked and transported on another bus from the scene.
Route 20 was shut down for an extended period of time following the wreck. Other emergency responders at the scene included the West Virginia State Police, Adrian Fire Department, Banks District Fire Department and Upshur County EMS.
The school bus driver posted about the wreck on social media Thursday morning.
“I was the driver,” Sharla Courtney-Smith posted. “Flash freeze black ice, fishtailed 3 times before coming to this resting spot.
“I did my best and I am praising the lord there were no cars coming, we didn’t go over the guard rail and I kept it on all 4,” she continued.
“When the Fire Dept., sheriffs dept., EMS and the wrecker arrived they were all sliding. I’m beyond grateful it was not as bad as it could have been and the kids are okay.”
A student who regularly rides the bus, Faith Woody, posted, “That’s my bus, i chose to drive today. but i just came back home. I slid trying to stop at the wreck.”
The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Watch for a large portion of the state, including Upshur, Randolph, Barbour and Pocahontas counties, from the morning of Saturday, Jan. 24, through the morning of Monday, Jan. 26.
Heavy snow is expected, with total snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches possible. Larger amounts, to 15 or more inches of snow, may be possible in higher elevations, according to the NWS.
