11 candidates running for Randolph BOE

ELKINS — The Randolph County Board of Education will see new faces as 11 people have filed to run for three available seats.

Three Board of Education seats that will be available are currently held by Dr. Phil Chua, Dr. Sherri Collett and Janie Newlon, and they are not not seeking re-election.

Candidates filing for the seats can be from any of the three districts, Cheat, Elkins or Tygart. Those who filed for Randolph Board of Education include: Jeri Luby, Randy Long, Denise Campbell, Jerod Caligiuri, Tyler Louk, Peggy Young Ross, Anita Thompson, Phillips Kolsun, Anglea Daniels Lewis, Robin Davis and Robert Fox.

The filing period for the West Virginia Primary Election came to a close on Saturday. The filing period began on Jan. 12 and it was well into the second week before any candidates filed for the Randolph County Board of Education.

“We had more than I expected to file for the Board of Education,” Randolph County Clerk Brenda Wiseman told The Inter-Mountain on Monday. “It was slow getting started but then we ended up with 11 on there. In the beginning there wasn’t anybody and then they all just started coming in.”

Four candidates, meanwhile, have filed for the run for the lone opening for Randolph County Commission in the Tygart District. That list includes long-time Commissioner Chris See, who will be seeking a fourth term, and newcomers Joseph Owens, Steve Wamsley and George “Russ” Collett.

Those running for Randolph County Republican Executive Committee include: David Kesling, Gretchen Price, Ricky Campbell, Barbara Tyre, Cris Siler and Tamera Sue Wooten. Kesling also filed for the Republican Executive Committee.

Naci Bross-Fregonara, Cindy Stemple, Raymond Godwin, David Long, Jerod Caligiuri, Tekoa Jones, Mandy Weirich, Farukh Khan, and Anita Fortney have all filed to run for Randolph County Democratic Executive Committee.

Republicans Cristin Dusenbury (Congressional Executive Committee, Del. District Executive Committee, Sen. Executive Committee), Rhett Dusenbury (Congressional Executive Committee, Del. District Executive Committee, Sen. Executive Committee) and Carolyn Jackson (Del. District Executive Committee, Sen. Executive Committee, Randolph County Executive Committee) filed for three seats apiece.

“It’s officially election season now and everyone will start their campaigning,” Wiseman said. “We have to submit all the names we received to the Secretary of State’s Office and then they have to certify all the names back to us and everybody who filed through their office. They send us a list back of everyone who is going to be on our ballot and then on February 24 we have the drawing for the positions on the ballot.”

Wiseman said the position drawing will be at 9 a.m. at the Randolph County Courthouse. It is open to the candidates and the general public.

Starting at $3.92/week.
