New details are released about Buckhannon fire
BUCKHANNON — New details have been released about the rescue of an infant and an elderly woman from a weekend structure fire in Upshur County.
The West Virginia State Police have announced that their initial Tuesday afternoon press release about the incident “erroneously” stated that a trooper made entry into the burning residence.
However, a new, revised release notes that Trooper C.J. Elmore of the Buckhannon Detachment “removed an elderly woman from the premises” and assisted a “10-month-old child in getting necessary medical attention.”
The second WVSP release, from Captain L. T. Goldie Jr., the Deputy Chief of Staff of the State Police, praises Elmore’s response during a structure fire on Kalafat Street in Buckhannon on Saturday.
The new releases states that at approximately 1 p.m. Saturday, Elmore responded to the fire and was the first law enforcement officer to arrive on scene. Upon arrival, Elmore observed smoke coming from a nearby residential structure.
As Elmore approached the residence, he heard a male individual shout, “My baby girl,” as the male individual ran into the smoke-filled home, the release states. Elmore immediately began moving toward the residence and inquired whether any occupants remained inside. A woman said her elderly mother was on the back porch.
“Elmore ran through the smoke to the back porch and assisted the elderly female down the outside staircase and safely escorted her to awaiting emergency medical personnel,” Goldie wrote in the second statement. “Trooper Elmore then noticed a 10-month-old infant, who had been removed from the smoke-filled home, in need of medical attention. He then carried the child to emergency medical services for evaluation.”
All eight occupants of the residence were safely evacuated without major injury, Goldie notes. Elmore then assisted the Buckhannon Fire Department and Upshur County EMS with traffic control to ensure the safety of emergency responders and the public.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office, the release states.
