Rock Cave man charged with identity theft
BUCKHANNON — A Rock Cave man faces multiple charges, including identity theft, after giving a Upshur County Sheriff’s Office deputy someone else’s information during a traffic stop, officials say.
David Michael Warman II, 50, of Rock Cave, is charged with identity theft, a felony. He is also charged with driving with a revoked license and possessing no insurance, both misdemeanors.
Warman was being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $5,000 property/surety bond that has since been posted.
According to a press release from the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department, on Feb. 7, Deputy Dakota Linger conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Route 20 for “defective equipment.” Upon making contact with the driver, Linger asked for his driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance, but the driver allegedly stated that his documentation had been left at home.
The driver identified himself as Joel Crawford and provided a date of birth and the last four digits of his Social Security number, the press release states. When Linger returned to his vehicle, he requested the Upshur County Communication Center verify the information. The name and date of birth matched; however, the last four digits of his Social Security number allegedly did not match. When Linger questioned the driver on the discrepancy, the driver allegedly corrected himself and gave Linger the correct Social Security number.
Through his investigation, Linger allegedly discovered that the vehicle did not have insurance, the release states. The vehicle was then towed.
On Feb. 12, Linger received a call from Warman regarding the Feb. 7 incident, the release states. When Linger arrived at Warman’s residence to speak in-person, Warman allegedly admitted that he had been the driver that night and he had given Linger false information. Warman reportedly said he had given Linger the name, date of birth, and SSN of his friend, Crawford, because Warman’s own driver’s license had been revoked for DUI.
Warman allegedly also admitted that, after he initially gave Linger the wrong SSN, he texted Crawford to get his SSN, the release states. After Crawford later became aware that he had received a citation due to Warman’s actions, he told Warman to “correct the situation.”
