Sheriff seeking information on BB gun incidents

ELKINS — Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon said his office is seeking the public’s assistance in helping identify individuals and victims who have been involved in a recent string of incidents in the area involving BB guns.

The Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating multiple instances where a vehicle was reported to be driving through the Elkins area and shooting at individuals with what is believed to be BB guns.

“It has happened in different areas around Elkins and we kind of chased it around the other night trying to locate a certain color vehicle,” Elbon said. “We are just looking for any information from people who may have heard or saw something, or from someone who might have been shot at and not reported it. We are just trying to piece it all together and figure out who is doing this.”

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received calls about someone being shot at with BBs on both Saturday and Sunday last weekend.

“Someone can seriously be injured by a BB gun. Everyone knows you can easily put out an eye with one,” Elbon said. “And someone shooting at another individual with a BB gun can also lead to something else as well, because a lot of Randolph County citizens carry themselves. You go waving a gun at someone, you may get one waved back at you.”

Elbon said all the incidents reported so far have happened in Elkins.

“Right now we are just looking at reports we have had in the immediate Elkins area. We haven’t heard anything else at this time,” Elbon said. “But we are trying to figure out if this happened anywhere else and if there are more people out there who may have been shot at…

“Back when we were kids we had BB guns and pellet guns and we never shot at people with them. We would just shoot at targets, cans and things like that. But someone always has to take it to the next level and make something dangerous out of it.”

Those with more information about the incidents are asked to contact Deputy S.R. Schoonover at 304-630-6227.

Starting at $3.92/week.
