ELKINS — An accident involving a Davis & Elkins College school bus led to traffic being brought to a temporary halt in both directions on Harpertown Road on Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Randolph County 911 reported that there was a single vehicle accident on Harpertown Road involving a D&E school bus. The Elkins Fire Department, the Elkins City Police Department and Randolph County EMS responded to the accident.

Though a caller advised 911 that the bus was “completely on its side,” an Inter-Mountain reporter on the scene saw that the bus was still upright.

The bus was sitting in both lanes of traffic on Harpertown Road, near the roadway that leads down to D&E’s Allen Athletic Fields and the McDonnell Center. No one appeared to be injured from the accident.

The Inter-Mountain reporter also witnessed several cars coming from Elkins toward Harpertown having to come to a complete stop and eventually be asked to turn around by firefighters.

Several vehicles coming from Harpertown were able to pass the bus and emergency response vehicles. A snowplow was also witnessed repeatedly plowing snow up the hill before turning around and heading back down towards the bus.

Harpertown Road was reportedly unblocked by approximately 1 p.m. on Thursday.

The Inter-Mountain reached out to Davis &Elkins College for further information and comment, but did not hear back from the college representative by press time.

The Elkins Fire Department, the Elkins City Police Department and Randolph County EMS all responded to the single-vehicle accident on Harpertown Road Thursday afternoon.
