Trooper rescues infant in Buckhannon fire

BUCKHANNON – A West Virginia State Trooper rescued a 10-month-old child and an elderly woman from a major structure fire on Saturday that involved multiple fire departments, officials report.
The West Virginia State Police state that, on Saturday, Feb. 7, at approximately 1 p.m., Trooper C. J. Elmore of the Buckhannon Detachment responded to a reported structure fire on Kalafat Street in Buckhannon.
Elmore was the first responder to arrive on scene and was met by a “distraught male occupant,” who advised that several individuals were still inside the residence, the release states. “Without regard for his own safety,” Elmore entered the smoke-filled structure.
Upon entry into the building, Elmore located an elderly female occupant, whom the State Police say he successfully removed from the residence. Elmore then re-entered the structure, which by then was “heavily engulfed in smoke,” and located a 10-month-old child, who he also rescued.
According to the release, shortly thereafter, personnel from Upshur County EMS and the Buckhannon City Fire Department arrived on scene. Both departments assumed fire suppression and medical operations.
In total, eight occupants of the residence escaped the fire, including the two individuals rescued by Elmore, the release states. No major injuries were reported.
“PFC. J. Warner assisted Trooper C. Elmore with a structure fire on Kalafat Drive involving multiple fire departments,” a Buckhannon City Police social media post states. “They were able to evacuate multiple occupants from the burning residence.”
The department thanked the Buckhannon Fire Department and Upshur County EMS “for their quick, efficient and resilient response,” as well as the Elkins Fire Department, Adrian Fire Department and Washington District Fire Department for their assistance with the fire.
The West Virginia State Fire Marshals are investigating the fire, according to the Buckhannon City Police Department.
