Upshur man charged with intimidation
Bryant
BUCKHANNON – An Upshur County man is facing multiple charges after allegedly obstructing, retaliating against and threatening to kill several Buckhannon City Police officers during his arrest.
Jared Nolan Bryant, 22, is charged with one count of intimidation of and retaliation against public officers, a felony. He is also charged with three misdemeanor charges including one count of obstructing law-enforcement, probation, parole, court security or corrections officer with threats of harm; one count of assault of government representatives, health care providers, utility workers or law enforcement; one count of battery on government representatives, health care providers, utility workers, law-enforcement and EMS.
Bryant is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond. A bond modification hearing has been scheduled for today in Upshur County Magistrate Court.
According to two criminal complaints filed by Sgt. William J. Courtney with the Buckhannon City Police Department, on Jan. 29, officers were dispatched to a residence on Highland Drive in reference to the removal of an unwanted person.
When Patrolman Cole Bender arrived on the scene, he allegedly witnessed a stovetop grill piece being thrown inside the residence, the complaint states. Upon entering the residence, Bender saw Bryant sitting on the kitchen floor “in broken glass from the oven door.” Bender then detained Bryant.
Courtney and Sgt. Darin K. Hissam arrived on the scene next, the complaint states. Bryant allegedly lied to officers about his age and name, calling himself Darrell. When Hissam was standing near Bryant, he allegedly attempted to kick Hissam. Bryant reportedly remained belligerent with officers and EMS after being cleared for a cut on his foot, allegedly threatening to kill Hissam.
As Courtney and Hissam were escorting Bryant into a police cruiser, Bryant allegedly continued to attempt kicking Hissam “multiple times,” the complaint states. Bryant also reportedly obstructed officers by “resisting being placed back into the police cruiser.”
According to a third criminal complaint filed for the same date by Patrolman First Class Wade Loudin with the Buckhannon City Police Department, Bryant was arrested on the charges of assault on a police officer and battery on a police officer.
Loudin’s complaint corroborates that Bryant allegedly threatened to kill Hissam before being taken to the Buckhannon City Police Department. Once at the department, Bryant allegedly continued to threaten to kill Hissam and he also reportedly made a quiet comment about Hissam’s family. When Hissam asked Bryant to repeat himself, Bryant refused to.
Bryant also allegedly made threats to kill Loudin and his family, the complaint states. While in transport to the Tygart Valley Regional Jail, Bryant allegedly still made comments about killing Hissam.
According to a fourth criminal complaint filed for that date by Hissam, when the back door of a police cruiser was opened to put Bryant inside and transport him to the jail, Bryant allegedly became “combative” and attempted to keep Hissam and Loudin from putting him in the cruiser.
Hissam was able to get Bryant into the cruiser in a seated position, but Bryant allegedly stuck one of his legs out of the cruiser to keep Hissam from closing the door, the complaint states. Hissam then attempted to grab Bryant’s leg to put it back inside the cruiser, at which point Bryant reportedly kicked Hissam in the thigh.
A preliminary hearing for Bryant was scheduled for today in Upshur County Magistrate Court.
