Upshur man facing firearm charges
BUCKHANNON — A man prohibited from possessing firearms faces two felony charges after allegedly carrying a concealed firearm into the Kanawha Lounge in Buckhannon.
Joseph Harold Morrison, 63, is charged with one count of persons prohibited from possessing firearms and one count of having a concealed firearm, both felonies. Morrison was being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $15,000 property/surety bond that has since been posted.
According to the criminal complaint, filed by Sgt. Tyler A. Gordon with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, on Jan. 24, Gordon responded to the Kanawha Lounge in Buckhannon in regard to an “altercation involving a firearm.”
The caller reported that there was a male subject in a brown coat with a gun, the complaint states. As Gordon entered the lounge, he encountered an older male subject wearing a brown coat who allegedly appeared to hide his body away from Gordon. At that moment, Gordon allegedly observed the magazine of a firearm in the male subject’s jacket.
The male subject was detained and a fully loaded magazine was allegedly found in the jacket pocket, the complaint states. The male subject was reportedly identified as Morrison.
Morrison allegedly admitted to Gordon that he was prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous felony convictions, the complaint states. According to Morrison’s criminal history, he has “numerous” convictions for manufacturing, selling and possessing methamphetamine and marijuana, and for possession of firearms while also possessing drugs. These convictions were in Virginia and occurred from 2005 to 2009.
A preliminary hearing for Morrison has been scheduled for Feb. 12 in Upshur County Magistrate Court.
